So yes, FORD are to update cars software using WiFi . This is my favourite kind of news! Some that contains both a car and a tech element. Well it’s mostly tech…
The Blue Oval have just announced that they are going to start updating their cars software over the interwebs. This is a step in the right direction for traditional car makers following Tesla’s 2015 launch and subsequent disruption of everything automotive.
FORD will accomplish the updates for it’s Sync 3 touch screen system via your choice of smart phone. So either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay will deliver the update direct to the Sync 3 system rather like how your phone updates I guess.
There’s not a massive amount of information yet but one suspects that there will be a FORD app, which will then update over your home WiFi, like a normal app, and then when you get back in your car and connect your phone with the Sync 3 system, it’ll then update. This is where I could be completely wrong but, hey I might just be bang on the money!
This is on the back of FORD hiring 400 engineers to work on connectivity, mostly from Blackberry Ltd’s phone handset business. When you thought Blackberry was dead you now find out that their QNX system powers Ford’s Sync 3 system. Hey, their software has always been pretty good, it was just that they didn’t know how to keep their hardware on point!
I’ve used the Sync3 and it’s a great system. You can read my review here
